Sutton Symphony Orchestra: Spring 2022 Concert

26 March @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

£12 – £18

“Music comes straight from the heart and talks only to the heart: it is love.” (Sergei Rachmaninov)

PROGRAMME & PERFORMERS
Tchaikovsky Marche Slave
Prokofiev Piano Concerto No 1
Rachmaninov Symphony No 2
Soloist John Paul Ekins
Conductor Philip Aslangul
Leader Annmarie McDade

ABOUT THE CONCERT
Rachmaninov’s Second Symphony is synonymous with romance and raw emotion, characterised by lush, arching melodies. It almost never existed (so affected was the composer by the criticism that faced his first attempt at a symphony), yet now it is one of his best-known and most-loved pieces.

It is the stirring conclusion of this term’s all-Russian concert, which begins with Tchaikovsky’s Marche Slave, a rousing march packed with Serbian folk tunes and blazing brass. Completing the Russian trio is Prokofiev’s impressive Piano Concerto No 1, for which we welcome to the stage John Paul Ekins. Balancing dreamlike mysticism with scampering energy, it is a tour de force that demands great skill and speed from its soloist, the result: surely one of the 20th century’s most impressive and imaginative contributions to the piano repertoire.
