Sutton car thief behind bars after stealing Range Rover, Mercedes, and motorbike

A car thief is behind bars after a series of thefts across South London and Surrey. Billy Raddon, 22, from Sutton, was jailed for nine years at Guildford Crown Court on Friday (May 17) after multiple offences including vehicle theft and robbery. The light-fingered motoring enthusiast was caught with £3,000 in cash, keys, and cocaine during a raid in Morden.

The bust came after an investigation launched by Surrey Police in response to a Range Rover that had been stolen from Sutton. The four-by-four was stopped by the Roads Policing Unit and the driver was arrested. It later transpired he had been paid to transport the stolen vehicle. Police then worked out Raddon was involved too, and that he had stolen a motorbike in London.

As well as cash and drugs, during the Morden raid police also found an electronic device used for Relay Thefts. This is a keyless car theft technique, where criminals use technology to trick the car into thinking the keys are physically present. Organised crime gangs receive the signal from a key inside a house and transfer it to a portable device, allowing them to unlock and drive the car in minutes.

After more investigation, Raddon was linked to the knife point robbery of a Mercedes in Caterham in December 2022. Police found videos on Raddon’s phone which showed him inside the stolen Merc as it was being driven towards Sutton, where the vehicle was eventually recovered. In all, Billy Raddon was eventually linked to six crimes.

Detective Constable McBain, from Surrey’s Proactive Investigation Team said: “Thanks to the hard work by everyone involved, we have been able to piece together his crimes spanning over a few months. Vehicle theft can have a huge financial impact on the victim and Raddon had not regard to how their crimes might affect the lives of their victims.
